Unapologetically Girly

Thursday, May 2, 2019 3:30 AM

Happy Friday Eve!

I am unapologetically girly!
I love makeup, nails, clothes, shoes, all things sparkly, chiffon, lace, pastels, you name it, I love it all.
I am going to go out on a limb and make an assumption that if you are here, reading this blog, you too love most things girly.

This past weekend I was getting a tea and the woman behind the counter said:

Woman: Ugh, your nails are so long

Me: Yes, they are

W: How do you do anything?

Me: Ummmm, with ease

W: When you have kids you won't be able to have those nails!

Me: I have a son...

W: How do you clean?

Me: Just...fine

W: Do you have a job?

(dumbfounded)

M: Yes, and I type all day long with these things! can you even believe it?

At this point I grabbed my tea and left.

Situations like this are not too infrequent.
I am constantly getting comments about my clothes, my hair,
my make-up, what I eat, etc.
I have been perceived and called vain, shallow, bougie
spoiled, lazy, high maintenance and entitled by people that don't know me.

After such jabs I have been told:

'That stuff isn't important to me'
That is great!! It is important to me, as are so many other things.  I think the misconception is that it is the ONLY thing that is important to me.

'It just isn't a priority'
This is also valid. If you don't mind rolling out of bed and facing the day as is, that is your prerogative. That being said, I would not say to you, 'I would never walk out of the house like that.'

'I just don't have the time'
I am a single mom to a 12 YO boy, in addition to S&S, I have a full time job.  After my 8-4, two or three nights a week I am either teaching or taking a dance class, the other nights I am attending either a football, basketball or baseball game.  By the time we get home, homework is done, showers are taken, it is passed 10 before I get into bed to watch a show and unwind. Then 5:45 a.m. my alarm goes off and it starts all over again.  Don't tell me about not having time.

We live in a time where women really want to be heard, and I am one of those women!
I am a feminist (don't gasp, it's not a dirty word), I believe in equality in the way that I embrace differences, but everyone should be treated with equal respect. I feel like somewhere along the way, in order to have strong opinions, ideas and convictions you had to appear less feminine and the woman who are feminine are seen as weak, shallow and not intelligent.

We need to throw away these stigmas and support other women,
people that are different or have different views or opinions.
We need to stop judging books by their covers.

Hi, I am Elise, I am an avid makeup enthusiast.
I love getting a mani and pedi, shopping is my therapy.
I also love cheeseburgers, true crime, discussing politics, podcasts and reading.
I am a music trivia nerd, a movie buff and so many other things.

Have you ever been a victim of girl shaming?

xx, Elise

  4. YES GIRL, PREACH IT.

    I don't understand the mentality that because you're girly, you can't do things/be smart/you're vain/you don't care about anything else. It's so completely one-dimensional.

I think you're a badass boss babe and I'm lucky to know ya!

  5. You are so right! I think we are all different and we all have different priorities and likes/dislikes. What the heck is wrong with that? I don't judge others for wearing yoga pants around, don't judge me for running around after my toddler in wedges. It's all good!

  6. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that woman! It always amazes me on how judgmental people can be who don't even take the time to know you. Differences make us unique and we should be embracing that! You are an amazing and I'm glad to know you through blogging!

  7. Oh my gosh I love this post!!! Thank you for writing such an accurate accounts of what it is like if you are interested in presenting your best self to the world. I love fashion, and yet some how that deems me a diva, stuck up, superficial, and shallow. Ugh, it goes on as you say. But I would never say to them, I can't believe you don't care about how you look. Also, I can rattle off the history of fashion as it pertains to the economy. People's eyes widen when I start going into the facts. GIRL KEEP BEING YOU AND KILLING IT! xo, Ellese

  8. You're assumption is correct - I too love most things girly very much! I love the lipstick graphic on your sweatshirt and the very pretty perfectly applied lipstick on your lips. I also love that you are a feminist. I pray that we get a feminist in the White house to replace the misogynist currently squatting there, and start the process of re-educating his sexist ilk and followers. Kudos on being your wonderful unapologetic girly self!

  10. It’s a bitch being beautiful!! Lots of those who criticize girly girls and just jealous because they don’t think they have IT. They should work with what they have and shut their mouths!

  12. Keep being you girl!!! Slowly but surely we are showing the world that we don't have to be defined by one thing. You can be girly and have long nails and (clearly) still be an awesome mom, etc! <3

  15. Wow! The nerve of that lady! I am super girly and I'm so excited that my daughter is too! I hate that some see it as being weak, naive, etc. And, I was a single mom for awhile too and kudos to you! It is seriously hard work, but it sounds like you pack in some fun too with the dance, etc.! :) I just love your lipstick sweatshirt!

  16. I totally get you, women also ask me how do I get time to blog and my other social media. I prioritise my 9-5 work and family, the left-over time is for myself while also cleaning the house. By the time it's all done it's late at night but I'm happy I still can do what I want to do. Thanks for sharing this, women should just support each other. Love your nails btw.

  20. I feel like this was a really important post Elise! I've been girl-shamed before for being too colorful, too bright, too girly and told that there was no way I could be serious or good at my job. So sorry that you had this experience! Keep your chin up and you do you boo! :)

  23. I can't believe that women said that to you, but you definitely have the right mindset! Just because someone appears girly does't mean that they are high maintenance or not smart. You're right that people should stop judging and shaming people and just be supportive and kind!

  24. Wow. I cannot believe someone would pass judgement like that? Like it's nails. Wow. I think that each person has their own hobbies, likes and dislikes and that is an amazing thing....as long as it doesn't involve putting other people down or harming others. I think you're awesome just the way you are!
